Cancer Care

A Warm Welcome

Everyone here at California Hospital's Donald P. Loker Cancer Center is personally committed to maintaining the highest standards of customer care - whether that means checking in on our patients before the end of a shift, or simply giving someone a warm smile when they need it most.

A History of Compassionate Care and Excellence
Established in 1922, the Donald P. Loker Cancer Center was the first treatment center in Los Angeles. Today, we are a respected leader in providing state-of-the-art radiation and medical oncology therapies for those whose lives are affected by Cancer.

We're Here For You
Whether you seek a referral for a routine cancer screening, need information for a family member, or would like a second opinion or consultation with one of our board certified specialists, we can help. We understand cancer can be quite intimidating. That's why we're here for you every step of the way.

Expertise You Trust
Through a combination of public awareness, regular screenings, and advanced techniques and technologies, many cancers are now accurately diagnosed in their earliest, most treatable stages.

California Hospital promotes early detection through multiple community screening opportunities and equips our specialists with the latest technologies to help in better decision making and treatment.

  • Mammography - a mammogram is an x-ray of the breast and is recommended annually for women ages 40 an up.
  • Image Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) - a highly advance and computer controlled x-ray use to deliver precise radiation doses to a malignant tumor or specific areas. The radiation dose conforms to the tumor's (3-D) shape with controlled intensity, minimizing exposure to healthy tissue.
  • High Dose Rate Brachytherapy - Radioactive seeds (about the size of a grain of rice) are placed in or near the tumor which will eventually (weeks or months) shrink the tumor to nothing. The seeds have no lasting effects.
  • Sentinel Node Biopsy - an innovative, minimally invasive sugery that enables doctors to detect even the slightest amount of cancerous tumors in the lymph nodes and remove only those nodes that are affected.
  • Chemotherapy - the use of drugs or combinations of drugs to kill or damage cancer cells in the body.
  • Cryosurgery - the use of extreme cold from liquid nitrogen to destroy abnormal tissue. Often used for skin, prostate and cervical cancers.

We're In This Together
Fighting cancer is a team effort. Your medical oncologist will coordinate your care and bring in other team members to help you decide on the best plan of attack. Your doctor will discuss your treatment options with you and may recommend a combination of treatments.

You are a major player in this team, so please ask questions. It can also help to bring someone along for support. Write down any questions you may have for your doctor. If you are not comfortable with the answers, you have the right to ask for a second opinion.
